27th Annual World’s Longest Yard Sale – US 127 Returns to Darke County

July 30, 2014 The US 127 Corridor Sale started in 1987 and ran for 18 years from Covington, Kentucky to Gasden, Alabama. In 2006, several counties in Ohio including Darke County jumped on board and this year, the 27th anniversary of the “World’s Longest Yard Sale,” at least one community in each of the counties along US127 are joining in the fun from the Michigan border to the Ohio River. Dates are Thursday, August 7 through Sunday, August 10.

Grants are awarded on a competitive basis, with primary consideration given to applications, which: (1) attract overnight visitors; (2) attract visitors from more than 50 miles outside of Darke County and (3) feature new or expanded events or programs.

"Art at The Mill" Opens New Season with Paintings and Pottery

March 7, 2013 Bear's Mill begins a new season of "Art at The Mill" with paintings by Elaine Balsley and pottery by Rick Paldino. Exhibit will be open from Friday, March 29 through Sunday, April 21. Painter Elaine Balsley will display work focused around “The Flavor of Italy,” while clay artist Rick Paldino's exhibit will feature pottery enhanced by hand-carved wood. Due to observance of Good Friday, the artists' reception which usually accompanies the opening will not occur until Friday, April 5 when light appetizers and wine will be served from 6 to 9 pm.

Eldora Speedway Supports Local Food Pantries

December 13, 2012 Speedway staff members and vendors gathered Saturday evening (Dec. 8) to celebrate the completion of a successful 2012 racing season at the venerable .500-mile clay oval speed plant; and in the spirit of the Christmas season, the theme was ‘Pack the Pantry.’ Collectively, the attendees collected enough non-perishable goods to overflow Eldora’s Chevrolet Silverado pace truck and raised nearly $7,000 in cash through an auction of donated items from area businesses and race teams. Benefiting from that generosity will be two area food banks – CALL (Community Action Life Line) Food Pantry of Mercer County and Fish Choice Pantry of Darke County.

Ohio Gov. Kasich signs bill that changes state tourism funding

July 6, 2012 Gov. John Kasich chose one of Cleveland's largest tourist attractions, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, to sign a bill Thursday that could double the amount spent each year promoting Ohio tourism -the state's fourth largest industry. The legislation jump starts a five-year experiment to determine whether Ohio's tourism industry can support its own marketing fund using a portion of sales tax revenue, which officials expect to increase.
