Darke County Visitors Bureau
When you are in Darke County and you see tourists shopping, dining and sightseeing, a motorcoach parked in downtown Greennville at an area attraction, or a group staying at a local hotel, chances are the bureau was behind the scenes helping to make it happen.
Visitor Bureaus realize that no area, regardless of its charm, facilities or other attributes sells itself, so destination marketing organizations around the world continually court leisure travelers, tour groups and meetings. It requires a strong, effective and adequately funded bureau to guarantee that Darke County remains a destination of choice.
Mission Statement
To enhance the economic growth of Darke County through the promotion and development of tourism.
History & Organization
Individuals from Darke County affiliated with the Chamber of Commerce organized the bureau in 1993. The purposes for the bureau established in 1993 still stand true today: to promote the features, facilities and attractions in Darke County; to solicit events; to provide locations for information and to communicate information to visitors. To accomplish these tasks, the Darke County Commissioners adopted several sections of the Ohio Revised Code, allowing them to collect a hotel lodging tax. This law mandated that local bureaus receive the funding for tourism projects and activities. Following the enactment of the hotel lodging tax in this area, the local bureau was created as an independent, non-profit corporation.
A volunteer board of directors governs the bureau. The board sets policy, approves financial matters and sees that the mission and objectives of the Bureau are fulfilled. Most of the board members are elected with some directors appointed by the cities and county that have enacted the hotel lodging tax in Darke County. The board employs an executive director who is responsible for hiring the other employees if funding allows, directing the day-to-day operations of the bureau and seeing that the various objectives, projects and activities of the bureau are successfully accomplished.
