Enjoy a morning discovery hike with the Darke County Parks! These hikes focus on bird watching, trees, fungi, wildflower ID and more. Bring binoculars or borrow from us. Dress for the weather as the hikes will take place in all weather conditions. Meet in the parking lot of Shawnee Prairie Preserve.

Wandering for Warblers

It's Warbler Season! Grab the binoculars, your trusty field guide and let's wander for warblers! Each Saturday in April and May we will begin at 9 am and scour Shawnee Prairie (and possibly other locations) for these brightly colored winged-gems! Beginning and "expert" birders alike are encouraged to join in on these often 35+ bird species hikes.

Weekly Butterfly Monitoring

Do you enjoy watching butterflies? Would you like to assist in scientific data collection? Join us as we record the butterfly population of Shawnee Prairie. Each week we'll hike a pre-set route and record all butterflies seen. Field guides will be provided.

Nature Day

Celebrate Nature! Grab your boots and get outside. Throughout this exciting day, Shawnee Prairie Preserve will be a flutter of activity for all ages. There will be scads of educational stations scattered throughout the park, from the wetlands to the woods filled with information and activities for all to enjoy. Children will have the opportunity to have their "passport" stamped at each station for a prize. There will also be scheduled, naturalist-led, hikes and programs throughout the day. Come on out to Shawnee Prairie Preserve to Discover (or re-discover) what your Darke County Parks has to offer!

Breakfast with the Birds

As a special way to start off the festivities during Nature Day, join Naturalist Robb Clifford for a morning carry-in breakfast and bird talk. After we eat, we'll grab the binoculars and field guides and head for the trails! With the help of the Darke County Birders, we'll determine where the "best" birds of the season are currently being located and focus our attention there. Binoculars and field guides are available for loan. Not interested in breakfast? Join us at 8am just for the bird walk! Meet at the Nature Center.
