Art at Bear's Mill Begins New Season

April 3, 2015 - May 13, 2015
11 a.m. till 5 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, and 1 p.m. till 5 p.m. Sundays

The first exhibit of the new “Art at the Mill” season at historic Bear’s Mill will feature the translucent watercolors of Richmond, Indiana, artist Barbary Easley, and unique willow furniture created by Indiana craftsman Greg Adams, as well as Bundy ducks, the work of famed decoy maker, John Bundy. In a change from past years, the exhibition will remain in place for six weeks, beginning April 3 and continuing through May 13. A reception for the artists will take place on April 10 from 7 to 9 p.m.; this reception offering appetizers and wine is free and open to the public. Barbara Easley says that when she picks up her brushes, she enters a world of magic and a fusion of color; her vibrant work shares that magical world with the viewer. She instantly fell in love with watercolor when she first began painting in 1993, and that passion continued through her moves from Indiana to McAllen, Texas, to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she earned accolades for her highly accessible paintings before returning to Indiana in 2008. “Flowers are my specialty, but I paint anything that inspires me,” the artist stated. She believes that watercolors offer inspiration in a realm of serenity, an assessment also held by the numerous worldwide purchasers of her work. Greg Adams’ hand-crafted willow furniture returns to Bear’s Mill, a site where the rustic pieces look entirely at home. Working quickly while the green branches are still pliable, Adams finds the material near his shop in Lapel Indiana, and then bends the willow to form unique chairs, tables, stools and other pieces. The son of a skilled carpenter says that his goal is to “bring the outdoors inside,” and “enrich my customer’s lives by the presence of natural items in their everyday lives.” The craftsman says that his designs have been refined over time, and that tested engineering renders them both sturdy and aesthetically pleasing. According to wood carver John Bundy, duck decoys are a truly American art form, with the first decoys having been made over ten centuries ago by Native Americans. Bundy, who has been making decoys since the late 1970’s, uses a unique overlay process combining the natural wood grain and color with a shiny finish to create what have been called the most beautiful duck decoys in the world. The Indiana native has seen his fame grow with his work being sold in prestigious galleries throughout the country including the Peabody Hotel in Memphis, known for its daily ceremony honoring its resident ducks, and displayed in the Oval Office of the White House. Dayton jazz artists The Blue Heron Trio at The Old Arcana

April 18, 2015
11:00AM-2:00PM

Dayton, Ohio jazz artists, Blue Heron Trio, make their return to The Old Arcana Stage, Saturday, April 18th, playing Jazz standards and Originals. The Trio will be performing from 11am-2pm. In 2011 three close friends came together in Dayton, Ohio to produce voluptuous jazz and pop tunes. Blue Heron Trio is the culmination of their combined 20 years of playing in punk, pop, folk, jazz, and cover bands. Reviewed as “one of the prettiest voices in Dayton” by DaytonRocks.com in 2001, vocalist Elisha Frontz leads listeners on a sensual journey through musical eras gone by, imbuing the music with a fresh, young feel. Phil Myers, formerly a musician for the United States Army, accompanies with lush saxophone riffs and gentle acoustic guitar. Dave Santucci solidifies the groove on the keyboards with his decades of piano experience. Whether it’s an original song, a jazz standard made famous by Ella Fitzgerald, or a completely unexpected lounge rendition from another genre (“Sweet Child ‘O Mine” by GunsNRoses is a crowd favorite), the trio performs with a deeply personal and authentic touch. A Night in Hollywood will showcase the Special Olympics participants by opening their artistic abilities to the public through a talent show and an art auction. Guests will be provided Hollywood themed refreshments throughout the duration of the talent show. There will be many opportunities to give back to Special Olympics fund throughout A Night In Hollywood with business donations, ticket prices, fun family games and much more. Since this will be the first ever fundraising event made specifically for the Darke County Special Olympics, organizers are aiming to double their annual donation by raising $7,000. They are looking to get the community connected to the Special Olympics in a way that they have never experience before by putting on A Night in Hollywood. Usually, the Special Olympic participants are limited to athletics. Organizers are aware that the Special Olympians are extremely talented in many ways! So, they would like to give them the opportunity to show off their own unique talents to the community. Their goal is to have all eyes on the Special Olympics participants so they may feel like the stars they are. Pre-sale tickets will be available at all Greenville National Bank branches, $10 for student tickets and $15 dollars for adults. Tables are also available for purchase for $200. Financial donations are appreciated. Please make checks payable to Supply Chain Management, 100 Greenwave Way, Greenville OH 45331. The doors to GHS Gymnasium will open at 5:30 that night. Organizers would love to get as many members from the community as possible involved to share this very special night.
