"A Community Christmas" Opens November 28 in Union City with Over 4 Million Lights!

November 28, 2014 - December 31, 2014

A lighted parade will kick off the 9th annual “A Community Christmas” on Friday, November 28, in Union City, IN. Registration & line-up will be from 5:00-5:45 p.m. at Randolph Eastern School Corporation's north parking lot. The parade, which begins at 6 p.m., will head south on N. Walnut St. to W. Oak St. & then west to Harter Park. The light display will be turned on at the conclusion of the parade. Organizations, businesses and individuals may enter floats, cars, trucks, golf carts, horses, motorcycles, wagons--all are welcome, just have to be lighted to enter. Pre-register by November 24 to be eligible for cash prizes. The spectacular light display, which boasts over four million lights, with additional lights added each year, will be open Thursdays-Sundays from November 28 to December 14, & open nightly from December 18 through New Year’s Eve. Hours are 6-9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday & 6-10 p.m. Friday & Saturday. Vehicles may enter from either drive off of Jackson Pike on the east end of the park only. There is no admission fee; however donations will be accepted at the gate. Donations benefit local groups who have signed up to welcome visitors and also help to continue the Christmas display in the future. The Gift Shop will be inside the shelter house near the horse arena and will be open Friday and Saturday evenings through December 20 from 6-9 p.m. Parking is available directly outside the Gift Shop. Kids can visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus every Friday and Saturday through December 20 from 6-8 p.m. Make it a family tradition to share the magic and joy of a winter wonderland during the 9th annual “A Community Christmas” in Union City, beginning Friday, November 28.

Darke County Parks Photo Contest

Winning photos submitted to the Park District Photo Contest will be used to create a 2016 calendar and will be sold in the Nature Center's Gift Shop. Project FeederWatch at Shawnee Prairie

Calling all birders! Project FeederWatch is an annual 'Citizen Science' program organized by Cornell University which studies winter bird populations. No matter your birding level, beginner or expert, your help is needed by the Darke County Park District! Gather inside the Nature Center to count the birds that visit the bird-feeding station at Shawnee Prairie.

Early Morning Discovery Hike

Santa Claus Lane

Santa Claus Lane is held at the York Woods, home of the Darke County Steam Threshers Association. This is a drive through light display there is no charge to get in. Donations are very much appreciated to keep this event running. We will be open 6-8 on December 6, 12, 13, 19, 20, 21, 22, & 23. Please come out to see Mr. and Mrs. Claus themselves.

Marketplace Monday at Greenville Public Library

The new Health Insurance Marketplace can be confusing. Come join us for a work group with a question and answer session to help you understand your options. This is a FREE service offered by a Certified Application Counselor (C.A.C.) from Family Health. Alexis, the C.A.C., will walk through a presentation of how to prepare for applying to the marketplace, and the requirements for the state Medicaid program. Christmas Tree Recycling

Not sure what to do with your dried-out, cut Christmas tree? Why not bring it to Shawnee Prairie Preserve to recycle it back to nature! This FREE event is hosted by Darke County Solid Waste District and all shredded trees will be used on the trails. Please remove all ornaments, lights, wire, tinsel and nails prior to arrival. Star Lab

Join the Darke County Parks as we welcome the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery's Star Lab to the Nature Center! This portable planetarium will be set up indoors to help us understand the night sky. As you enter the darkened dome, you will learn how to identify many of the famous winter constellations such as Orion the Hunter as well as favorites such as the Big and Little Dippers. This program is truly unique and a great opportunity for the whole family to learn and have fun together. Please pre-register early as space is limited inside the planetarium.

Terrific Timbers

The Timber Rattlesnake is Ohio's largest venomous snake. Timbers were historically found across much of Ohio, but viable populations have now been reduced to three general areas. Join the Darke County Parks as they welcome Doug Wynn and learn (and see UP CLOSE) these amazing rattlesnakes. Doug Wynn is a retired high school ecology teacher and has had a special interest in snakes and studying them since his undergraduate years. Doug is now presently coauthoring and editing a book on turtles, lizards and snakes of Ohio which is being funded by the Ohio Division of Wildlife and will be published by the Ohio Biological Survey, Inc.

Winter Day Camp: Cold Weather Survival

Since the kids have the day off school, join the Darke County Parks for Winter Day Camp! Explore the winter woods while searching for a place to spend the "evening." Everyone will learn to build a temporary debris shelter that they could spend the night in, if needed. Hike off trail using navigation skills to look for a water source and practice building fires. Remember to dress for the weather and call the Nature Center to pre-register.
