Visit Log House and Blacksmith Shop

Each Saturday from May through September, travel back to the 18th century to explore both the Log House and the Blacksmith Shop at Shawnee Prairie Preserve. The sound of hammers and anvil will be ringing as the smiths prepare new material for the Log House. The Pioneers in the Log House will be working on their daily chores just like in the 1700’s.

Downtown Greenville Farmers' Market

The downtown Greenville Farmers’ Market has been a Darke County summer staple since 1998. This year promises to be another great year for fresh produce (as it is ready for harvest), baked goods and handmade crafts from local vendors. Vendors will offer various goods ranging from embroidered crafts, vintage bears/dolls and handmade jewelry to produce, baked goods, herbs and fresh flowers. Event attendees can expect to see a varied lineup of vendors and goods each week. Vendor applications are accepted throughout the season. Watercolors and Wood Sculptures on Display at Bear's Mill

Wood sculptures by Tom Bartel will be displayed alongside the watercolors of Peter Frederick at Historic Bear's Mill during the month of September. The monthly "Art at the Mill" series features the work of an artist who creates three-dimensional pieces alongside complementary two-dimensional fine art. The Bartel/Frederick exhibit opens on Friday, August 29 with a reception featuring hors d'oeuvres and drinks from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The artists will speak briefly about their work, methods and inspiration at 7:00 p.m. This exhibit continues through Sunday, September 21.

Wine Tasting and Art Auction to benefit the Bradford Ohio Railroad Museum

Bradford Ohio Railroad Museum will host an art auction and wine tasting event. This year there will be a featured artist Ginger Godfrey better known as, GG. She is a very talented and accomplished artist and will have many of her pieces on display. The museum recently renovated the lower level to accommodate a children's learning center and installed a N - Scale replica of the Bradford Junction yards. This is a major fund raising event for the museum. No reservation is required. You can pay the $25 admission at the door. If you don't like wine there are other beverages to enjoy and light refreshments.

Fall Kickball Tournament

St. Peter's Homecoming

The historic St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran, located on St. Peter’s Road south of Versailles off of State Route 185 south, will host its annual Homecoming on Sept. 21. This year’s celebration will commemorate the 109th anniversary of the church’s closing. The day will begin with a Hog Roast dinner (pulled pork sandwich on a bakery fresh bun with au gratin potatoes, baked beans and delicious homemade apple crisp), prepared by Trinity of Versailles and served on the church lawn at 12:30 p.m. The cost is $10 with advanced reservations to J. R. Kelch, 105 Greenhaven Drive, Greenville, Ohio 45331 before Sept. 15. Special music will be provided by the Lance Family Singers at 1:45 p.m. A historic Hymn Sing and brief worship service will begin at 2 p.m. with Pastor Bob Akins of Trinity as the clergy for the day. The original pump organ, which is over 125 years old, will be used for the service. Come and enjoy an autumn afternoon in the country where our ancestors walked and prayed. The St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 1850 by a group of Prussian immigrants who settled around Webster, Ohio beginning in the early 1830’s. Because of this large German influx, the area became known as “Dutch Roost.” These rich forests became fertile fields and successful farms for the enterprising Germans who were eager to make this part of America their home. Most were staunch Lutheran in their religious upbringing and attended Friedens at Bloomer, some five miles away. While by today’s standards is not far, when the entire family walks to worship in all seasons the trip becomes much more daunting. By 1850 the families around Webster began to plan for their own church. The log church was built on land donated by Fredrick Seibt and was centered in the settlement. The simple church later covered in clapboard, remains as they left it in 1905 when the preference for English over their native German was preferred for worship. St. Peter’s is believed to be the last log church in Wayne Township and possibly in Darke County. Today, St. Peter’s is on the National Register of historic buildings. While the descendants of those early German families are scattered all over the United States, a service is held once a year. This is a chance for reunions or perhaps more importantly a chance to step back and give thanks for those who walked these roads before us. Please join them as they celebrate their legacy, their story, in their home.

Greenville Art Guild's 39th Annual Art Show and Sale

The Greenville Art Guild invites all area amateur, professional or student artists (age 14-22) to its 39th annual art show, September 27 through October 1. Invitees are welcome to exhibit their original artwork in the following categories: drawing media, (graphite, charcoal, colored pencil, pen and ink), oil, acrylics (executed in the manner of oils), pastel, water media (transparent watercolor and aquatic medium), mixed media, photography, miniatures (4"x6" or smaller not including frame) and three dimensional (pottery, sculpture, jewelry, textiles, stained glass and art in the round or relief format). Entries must be postmarked by Friday, September 12 and each artist is limited to three entries. Art may be delivered to the nature center on September 24, 2-6 p.m. The Guild is excited to announce that Trish McKinney, an accomplished artist from New Carlisle, will be the 2014 judge. She currently has her studio at the Hotel Gallery in Tipp City. The awards presentation and reception will be September 26 at 7 p.m. and the show will open to the public beginning with Prairie Days on September 27 and ending on October 1. Darke County United Way Tractor Cruise

The Tractor Cruise will parade through Greenville beginning at the Fairgrounds at 10:00 am, and travel from Martz Street down Fair Street to Washington, from Washington onto Broadway, around the traffic circle, onto Main Street, and traveling back to the fairgrounds via Chestnut St/Fort Jefferson Ave. In past years, forty tractors participated in the event. Please call the United Way office at (937) 547-1272 if you would like to register your tractor for the event. Registration is $15 and all proceeds support the Darke County United Way’s local programs to strengthen education, health and stability. We encourage all drivers to collect pledges for the United Way. There will be prizes for the largest amount of pledges collected. Pledges can be turned in to the United Way office on Friday, September 26 or the morning of the cruise. Prairie Days

You're invited to Prairie Days! Enjoy a weekend celebrating prairies and the pioneer way of life! See apple butter being made over the fire, play children’s pioneer games, take a horse and wagon ride, compete in foot races and seed-spitting contests, view local artists’ works, listen to and enjoy live music and entertainment. This year we will have performances by The Darke County Civic Theatre on Saturday at 11 am and 3 pm and Sunday at 3 pm. Enjoy music from the Thien Snipps, Robert DeMange, Silver Grass and more! Between performances, sit-a-spell with the pioneer volunteers in the 200 year old Log House as they demonstrate many skills such as spinning, leather work and making butter. Try your hand at candle-dipping, tinsmithing or take a wagon ride around the prairie. Take a stroll through the 18th century encampment and watch a tomahawk and knife throwing competition. Visit the Blacksmith Shop to see the master blacksmith working around the forge. And what is a festival without food? Take a load off as you enjoy fresh produce from Downing’s Fruit Farm or visit one of the many non-profit vendors. Participate in a pie-baking contest, try your luck at the annual basket raffle, and so much more. New this year, vendors from the regional Gourd Society will have their artwork on display. Admission and parking are FREE! Transportation from the main parking areas will once again be provided by Greenville Transit System (GTS). Parking areas will be well marked with plenty of signage. Handicap parking will be held in the paved lot at the Nature Center (please be sure to have your Handicap Placard visible).

33rd Annual Harvest of Quilts

DCCA Artists Series presents JOSHUA CARSWELL

Darke County Center for the Arts will present singer Joshua Carswell at Henry St. Clair Memorial Hall in Greenville on Saturday, October 11; the show begins at 8 p.m. Just 25 years old, Carswell has already performed at Carnegie Hall and released his first solo album featuring great American standards ranging from “I Only Have Eyes for You” to Hank Williams' plaintive “I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry.” Joshua Carswell, who has been singing since he was a three-year-old, loves multiple musical styles and genres, and has the extraordinary skill to perform and interpret almost any song in a manner that immediately captures his audience and leaves them wanting more. Showtime is 2 p.m. This delightful musical based on the book by Judy Schachner unleashes kids' imaginations and empowers their dreams while offering a really good time for everyone involved. Darke County Center for the Arts will open their new Coffeehouse Series season on Thursday, October 16 at the Arts Depot in Union City with a performance by Poetry Alive!. Poetry Alive! utilizes a team of skilled actors to create little plays out of each poem they perform; this is not poetry recitation, but an exciting performance that will make you laugh, make you cry, maybe even inspire and fulfill you. Poetry Alive! truly brings poetry alive. DCCA's Coffeehouse Series offers shows in casual social settings where food and drink are available for purchase, providing an opportunity to enjoy high quality professional performing artists in a relaxed atmosphere at an economical cost.
